Staff Compensation. . . Motivated to Perform

In leading your office staff it is important to have life examples to help them understand the economics of running a practice. Optometry business is like any other business in the nut and bolts of staff compensation. The more profitable a company is the more funds available to compensate your staff. I find it interesting that the new year brings about questions of raises and compensation. Most recently our new optical manager explained in a meeting with the owners/doctors that if we increased the compensation for the staff then this would result in more motivated staff. For those of you seasoned veterans in staff management, you are aware that the almighty dollar can be motivating but many times it is like the excitement of a child with a new puppy. The newness wears off and then it is back to business as usual.
The movie Moneyball starring Brad Pitt is a great example of a team that performed great on a significantly lower budget. The success was not only based on putting the right statistical numbers of the players together, but also forming a team that believed in the philosophy and the team as a whole. During our business meeting I requested that our optical manager watch the movie Moneyball and bring back to me the similarities between the movie and how we do business at our office.
If you continually battle the mindset that more money equals better performance then consider the philosophy of Moneyball.
