Avoid Interview Mistakes
Now that I have been in practice for 10 years, I have conducted hundreds of interviews for optometry practice positions. This includes both ODs and non-OD positions. The benefit of being the younger of the partners is that you get to do all the interviewing. I find that when I travel the country speaking to students that I have my radar up for the next optometry superstar. As professionals we are ALWAYS being interviewed, evaluated, critiqued, etc. Whether we accept it or not, we are under the microscope of society because we are doctors. This post relates more to the interviewing process yet it is still important to remember that as an optometrist we are ALWAYS being interviewed. Below are a list of things to keep in mind . . .
- Being late to the meeting
- Failing to check your appearance (80% of communication is non-verbal)
- Acting way too friendly
- Talking rather than listening (ask great questions, do your homework ahead of time)
- Arguing with the interviewer
- Giving predictable answers
- Falling short on knowledge of the position
- Being disorganized in the interview (come to the interview with minimal “extras” note taking only, no purses, phones, bags, etc.)
- Getting distracted by your phone (leave it in the car)
- Not thanking the interviewer for their time and consideration (closure is key, be prepared with a closing statement)
Employers are looking at three aspects in the interview process. They are Character, Chemistry, and Competency. Be prepared to explain how you will be a great fit in these three areas.
